Diameter at Breast Height

DBH (Diameter at Breast Height) is a standard measurement of a tree's trunk diameter, taken at 1.3meters (4.5ft) above ground level. Here's how you can calculate it:

Tools You'll Need:
A measuring tape (flexible for wrapping around the tree).
A calculator (optional for conversions).

Steps to Measure DBH:

1. Measure the Circumference:
Wrap the measuring tape around the tree trunk at 1.3meters (4.5 feet) above ground.
Ensure the tape is level and not twisted. Record the circumference (C) in centimeters or inches.

2. Calculate the Diameter:

             Circumference
DBH = ______________
                       Pi

3. Convert Units (if needed):
If you measured in inches but want theDBH in centimeters, multiply the diameter in inches by 2.54

Example:
Circumference: 100cm
Calculation:

                    100
DBH = ______________ ~ 31.83cm
                   3.1416

Special Cases:
Trees with Multiple Stems: Measure each stem separately and calculate DBH for each.
Irregular Shapes or Textures: Measure just about above or below the irregularity.

This method ensures consistency for forestry, ecological research, and tree records.
